•What are your interests?
-Motherhood
-Dreams

•What have you found out?
-that there are many areas to look at in both

•How have you collected information?
-I have collected information in a mind map in my visual journal

•How can you extend your research?
-books
-websites
-talking to people about their own experiences
-using my own experiences
-illustrations
-animations

VISUAL EVALUATION, SELECTION & SUMMARY

VISUAL EVALUATION, SELECTION & SUMMARY
Intro
Throughout this essay folktales from around the world have been explored using character design with different drawing techniques. A range of drawing styles were used to try and establish a style suited to effectively include the individual characteristics of each character, which is crucial in enabling one to recognise the myth that it is from. Therefore, the help of sites such as Pinterest and Wikipedia as well as books were incredibly useful when gathering information for each character as information can differ from source to source.

Conclusion
To conclude, this project has been a success as it has resulted in the development of style and knowledge. This will enable the ability to create more characters easier at more speed and fluidity. The use of Pinterest and Wikipedia was very useful as well and will be used for a future project due to accessibility. Next time, more uses of books should be used to find the folktales that the characters originated from would be useful as folktales written online can be changed and altered so it is better to have a closer account of the original tale.

Devon Short
I'm Devon, ? four Animation .. em ..what do I just say just thing …

Cara
Ya, just say the fairy tale

DS
I use to read the hare and the tortoise when I was younger, an Asops Fables book. What shall I say about it?

CJ
Just, like, just tell me the story, like, tell me what happens

DS
Well the rabbit, no!, the hare and the tortoise have a race and erm, the hare gets cocky half way through and takes a nap and the tortoise overtakes him and so erm Aspos Fables always have  moral and the slow and steady always win the race. I don’t know why I always remember that one.

Gabbi Slater
My name is Gab Slater, I’m in animation level 4, and the fairy tale I’m going to talk about is The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson. So … the Little Mermaid begins with the Little Mermaid; she doesn’t have a name in the original, and she wants to be human because she finds the human world really fascinating and she goes up to the surface and watches a ship just on the sea and then a storm breaks and the ship eventually sinks and the Little Mermaid rescues the Prince that was onboard and brings him onto land and she decides that she wants to be human. And she goes to the Sea Witch and the Sea Witch says that in return for legs, I want your voice and as well as that, every time you step it will feel that you are stepping on knives. And she agrees and she goes upto the surface and she doesn’t have a voice and every step is agony. She ends up at the palace and the Price takes her in. And he feels like he’s known her before but she can’t tell him so he doesn’t think that she’s come to see him and another woman comes along and they fall in love and the Little Mermaid is really distraught but decides to dance a the wedding even thought it causes her pain. And the Sea Witch tells her that if you kill the wife and the Prince, you will remain human forever with your voice back and you won’t hurt anymore, or you will be turned into sea foam. And she goes to try to kill them in their sleep and she decides that she can’t do it. She wants to see if she can begin to turn into sea foam, but then these water nymphs come up to see her and say ‘ah you’re too kind to have a fate like this, you will join us, and she becomes one of the waves and becomes a water nymph. Yay!

Jenny Leecs
Animation, module 4, The story of the Liver Birds
There’s two Liver Birds … one of them goes out to, facing out towards the sea to protect people coming in, like ships and stuff and then one facing towards the city to protect the people. And they can’t ever meet, cause if they ever met each other, their backs are facing away from each other, if they ever came together and saw each other then the city would crumble
CJ
OK, and thats just like a Liverpool thing?
JL
Yea. Its a thing, its a weird thing, but its why you see Liver Birds everywhere, ‘cause people like Liver Birds

Emily Hogg
I’m Emily, I’m a level 4 animation student. I’ll be telling you about Issun-boshi. It’s a Japanese fairy tale, about, it’s this boy who, well, this child, this old couple didn’t have any children; wished for a child, and they got a child, but he didn’t grow higher then 3cm, so it’s like Tom Thumb basically, but Japanese Tom Thumb, and I don’t know what Tom Thumb, but why, but I grew up with these. So like, there’s this little kid, right, and so there’s this little kid grows up, he’s an adult but he’s fucking 3 cm . Am I aloud to swear?
CJ
Go for it
EH
And so like one day he’s, like, he decided to leave and he’s like, I’m going to go and do stuff and his parents were like, alright, and so like he travels in a like a little erm soup bowl, little chop stick for a rowing thing, and has like a needle for his sword. It’s really cute! And then, em, he finds employment in a city where this palace had this princess who was kidnapped by a demon only troll thing, I don’t know, I don’t know what an one is in English. And so he goes and so finds finds and, he’s still fucking only 3cm tall mind you. I say he decides to fight him and them em er he tries to fight him. He gets eaten, but then inside the eh erm beast demon guy’s stomach, he has his little needle and he starts stabbing him from within and the guys like ‘Oh my stomach! My fucking stomach!’ and he climbs out and he wins and he gets this magic mallet thing and he marries the girl that he saves and he becomes tall. The end (claps)
CJ
So you know, like, the character looks like? The little thimble guy? Can you like describe him?
EH
He’s like a little kid like, er hold on lets see if we can get a  err …
CJ
Whats his name?
EH
Issun-boshi. These were in the little picture books I grew up with ‘cause it was more like, it was a lot more cartoony. Kinda like this shit. Yes this is him
CJ
Do you want to like verbally describe him?
EH
Yes sorry. He’s more like rogues, like a hokuma? I don’t know what the correct term is. He’s got a bit of a top knot going cause he’s like ancient Japan. His little soup bowl is like a classy dracky soup bowl. Its like lacquer and its like erm black on the outside, black on the outside and like red on the inside and you’d have your little miso soup in there. There’s him and his little chop stick and er em like rowing in the river; that’s his iconic look
CJ
Thats very cool
EH
But yea, he is 3cm tall. Because Issun is like a measurement of something. It’s like … an inch. It’s like an old measurement that people used
